Frequently Asked Questions

Lakewalk is part of a nationwide shift toward outpatient procedures being performed at dedicated facilities, away from hospitals where more seriously ill patients are served.

Below, find answers to some of the common questions about Lakewalk. You can also review our Patient Feedback page, which lists actual patient comments.

How does the length of patient stays at Lakewalk compare to the same procedure at a hospital?

Every procedure and situation is unique, but turn-around time nationwide between surgeries is as much as three times faster than at hospitals, which means less waiting for patients.

What can I expect if my child has surgery at Lakewalk?

Children and families are treated with the utmost care. Young patients receive a special “Dr. Bear” plush toy to cuddle during their time at Lakewalk and take home afterward.

Parents are encouraged to be with their child as much as possible, right up to the time of surgery and during recovery. At Lakewalk, anesthesiologists will even place your son or daughter under anesthesia while he or she is held in the arms of a loved one – a gentler and more comforting option for your child.

Families appreciate Lakewalk’s pleasant, friendly environment far from the more critical illness and emergency situations one may witness in a hospital.

How is Lakewalk different from a hospital?

Lakewalk has eliminated many common concerns about day surgery.

Free parking near the building; a drive-up canopied drop-off/pick-up area; fully accessible first-floor facility; private pre-surgery and recovery rooms; and a discreet patient exit make your experience easier and more convenient. Lakewalk is also located away from congested downtown streets.

With a high staff-to-patient ratio, our team of nurses provides patients with both extremely skilled and attentive care. And, because Lakewalk focuses only on outpatient surgeries, procedures are not delayed by more critical cases, as sometimes happens at hospitals.

How do I arrange to have my surgery done at Lakewalk?

You and your physician can make the decision to have your procedure performed here. Lakewalk is independent, so doctors don’t need to be employed by the facility to utilize it. Currently, more than 80 accredited physicians hold privileges at Lakewalk.

Tell your doctor or doctor’s office staff that you’d like your surgery scheduled at Lakewalk.

I’m traveling from out of town for a procedure at Lakewalk. Where can my family and I stay while we’re in Duluth?

Lakewalk is licensed for 23-hour care, but it’s rare for a patient to remain with us for that length of time. Accommodations are readily available along London Road, in nearby Canal Park and Downtown Duluth. For more information, contact the Duluth Convention & Visitors Bureau at (218) 722-4011 or 1-800-438-5884.
